Four Face Five-Year Jail Term for Killing Animals
The first trial of four men allegedly killing orang utans and other endangered species at an oil palm plantation in East Kalimantan began on Tuesday at the Kutai Kartanegara Court.
The four men faced more than five years in jail if proven guilty of killing the endangered species.
The prosecutor said Phuah Chuan Hun, an estate manager, and Widiantoro, assistant of plantation head at a plantation firm, paid two men Imam Mutarom and Mujiyanto to kill the orang utans. The two men were paid Rp 1 million (US$111) for each orang utan, and Rp 200,000 for a monkey.
They, the prosecutor said, used airsoft gun to shoot the orang utans out of trees before their hunting dogs chased them. The orang utans would then be hit by wooden sticks or rocks to death before taking pictures for evidence.
The four men were arrested in November of last year after photos of the slaughtered primates were circulated in the local media

Strengthen Agro Policy - NESG Recommends
The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has reiterated the need for a legislative backing for key components of the federal government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA). This formed part of the recommendations of the recently concluded Nigerian Economic Summit (NES19) presented by the NESG at the second meeting of the Presidential Eminent Persons Group on Nigeria’s Agriculture, held in New York, USA.
According to a statement, during the meeting, the NESG Chairman, Mr. Foluso Phillips, presented recommendations of the recent NES, which was held in Abuja. It was recommended at the summit that a more holistic approach be taken towards the development of the agricultural sector in Nigeria.
Also, the participants had stressed that more needed to be done to “connect the dots” in relation to ICT, Infrastructure, research and development financing and public-private partnerships, if Nigeria was truly to become a global agricultural power house.
Some other areas by Philips were to build the capacity of ministries, departments and agencies, to understand, own and implement the ATA; accelerating the implementation of Staple Crop Processing Zones; privatising the existing commodities exchange and expanding the size /sustainability of the Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme.
The meeting also had in attendance President Goodluck Jonathan; President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates; President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Dr. Kanayo Nwanze; and Former Secretary General, United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, among others.

Ogun Targets 1,200 Rice Farmers
Ogun State Government says its 100-hectare Ofada Rice Project located in Shagbon village, Eggua in Yewa North local government area of the state will empower no fewer than 1,200 farmers through the provision of direct and indirect labour.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, who spoke during an inspection visit to the project farmland, disclosed that it is expected to attract 200 farmers and at least 1000 farm hands.
Apart from providing land for the farmers, Sokefun said the state government will also provide farming inputs such as rice seeds and fertilizer needed and buy back the produce after harvest.
“Government will not only be providing you land for the planting of the rice, but we will also be responsible for providing viable rice seeds and other inputs needed to ensure a bumper harvest,” she promised.
The commissioner noted that the 100 hectare of land earmarked for the project is a veritable attempt by government to over challenges of land clearing usually encountered by farmers, saying her ministry has already begun the clearing and ploughing of the land.
She explained that the gesture would enable farmers to plant larger land sizes and thereby enhance production of ofada rice.
Sokefun, however, added that the land would first be used for planting late maize and short term Nerica rice to ensure optimal use.
In his remark, a representative of the farmers, Mr. Azeez Adeniji, expressed appreciation of farmers in the area to government for the project and assured of their commitment to ensure its success.
Also speaking, a resident in Shagbon village, Mr. Onifade Oladehinde, lauded government for making use of the land that had been acquired over three decades.
He, however, solicited for the provision of potable water, access roads and medical staff for the maternity clinic in the village.

Libya Returnees turn Farmers
No fewer than 200 returnees from Libya have initiated plans to begin the cultivation of 17,666 hectares of oil palm plantation in Ugbogui village, Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo, one of the returnees has said.
Mr Solomon Okoduwa, the leader of the returnees and Founder of the Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration, Immigration and Development (IYAMID), unfolded the plan in Benin on Thursday.
Okoduwa told newsmen that Prophet T.B Joshua, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, donated N20 million to the foundation to start the farm.
He said the money was used to acquire the land for the plantation.
We have recently acquired about 17, 666 hectares of oil palm plantation at Ugbogui with proceeds from the money donated by the prophet in line with his advice.
This farmland will help to quench hunger, reduce youth restiveness, and create more opportunities for Edo youths to shun crime and criminality.
It will also encourage those who are still stranded in Libya but willing to come back home to have a place they can be a part of.’’
Okuduwa also said Joshua gave 50 returnees N100,000 cash and two bags of rice each in 2011.
We pray that the good Lord will continue to strengthen, enable and use our most valued man of God to continue his good work of charity and service to humanity.
